COLUMBUS, INDIANA ––   LHP Engineering Solutions (LHP) has announced the creation of the Functional Safety Expressway (FSXpressway) as a response to the new safety-critical regulations (ISO 26262) that are impacting the design and development of all on-highway vehicles, including trucks, buses, trailers, semitrailers, and motorcycles in 2018.

Created by LHP’s Steve Neemeh, the FSXpressway focuses on getting both small companies and large multinationals and startups positioned to execute functional safety projects and refine compliance processes. LHP is striving to provide a comprehensive solution and a path towards product compliance that not only addresses the technical and process hurdles, but also business limitations.

Rinehart Motion Systems (RMS) is one of the earliest adopters.  Founded in 2002, RMS provides propulsion inverters and ancillary power electronics assemblies for new and emerging applications of electric (EV) and hybrid electric (HEV) ground vehicles. They currently play in the specialty vehicle market, focusing on motorsports and motorcycles, worldwide, with sights set on breaking into new vehicle markets.

With the changing standard, and more stringent regulations affecting passenger vehicles, the ISO 26262 standard is a barrier to entry if companies in the emerging vehicle markets cannot comply. Rinehart’s customers were beginning to feel the effects of the changing regulations. Aware of the changing compliance landscape, founder and president of RMS, Larry Rinehart, decided to make changes in their structure and processes to scale correctly and meet the demands of the new vehicle market.

Opening doors to new customers and on-highway markets through ISO 26262 compliance was a priority for RMS. Guidelines put in place by LHP as part of its FSXpressway have allowed RMS to navigate through the management, procedures, infrastructure, and documentation of ISO 26262 without limiting RMS as a dynamic organization.

Neemeh explains, “For small organizations, safety standards and regulations can be hard to adopt. The guidelines are confusing, and most companies need guidance. Being ready to implement functional safety, however, doesn’t have to take years, it can be staged and rolled out strategically for the benefit of the business.

Rinehart is optimistic, saying “We couldn’t have done it without LHP’s help. We now have a competitive advantage in the marketplace and can grow as the regulations change to cover the expanding vehicle markets.”
