In this compelling presentation, Steve Neemeh, CTO of LHP Engineering Solutions and a leading expert in safety-critical systems, explores the often conflicting relationship between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Functional Safety within the automotive industry. With decades of experience in embedded software engineering and regulatory compliance, Steve offers a critical analysis of how legacy safety frameworks are being challenged—and reshaped—by the rise of AI and machine learning.
Presentation Highlights:
- From Seatbelts to Silicon: A look at the historical evolution of automotive safety regulations, including NHTSA’s AEB mandate, and how past lessons inform today’s challenges.
- ISO 26262 Meets Machine Learning: A breakdown of the structure and intent of ISO 26262, and why applying its principles to probabilistic AI systems presents unique hurdles.
- Safety in the Age of Autonomy: An overview of emerging standards like ISO 8800 and the EU AI Act, and their implications for system developers and OEMs.
- Cybersecurity & Functional Safety – Two Sides of the Same Coin: How threat models and safety assurance cases must converge in AI-enabled vehicles.
- Case Studies & Compliance Realities: Real-world examples of how companies are struggling—and succeeding—in validating AI-driven functionality under stringent safety expectations.
With a focus on the need for a unified safety case that encompasses functional safety, AI risk, and cybersecurity, Steve Neemeh challenges the audience to rethink traditional engineering assumptions. This session offers critical insights for safety managers, developers, regulatory teams, and executives navigating the transition to intelligent, autonomous vehicle platforms.
Join us as we map the road to a future where AI innovation and safety assurance must coexist—or collide.
